To My Wife, On Our Fourth Anniversary

Four years ago

we started our day

Just you and me

Today we fumble

Finding a new groove

Because we three

Are a family, growing

Like a tree expanding it roots

Further in the ground

Trying to grab hold

Create a base

Safe and sound

With arms growing longer

To envelope

All we’ve made

A lush canopy

For hanging around

Resting in the shade

That will be tested

Time and again

Despite our best efforts

To keep at bay

Forces that will teach us

How to sway

Learn to bend

Not break

Not snap

Even if this baby boy

Our bundle of joy

Currently saps

Our reserves

That we’ll restore

As we come to know

Whether or not

We can bend

While we grow

Beyond the start

From four years ago

To where we’ll be tomorrow.
